Spring Breakers (2012)

10/21/23

Could I describe this film like if Terrence Malick took a bunch of boner pills from the nearest gas station and crushed in some coke and snort and drank the resulting concoction and then watched Bladerunner and also Bad Boys II.

There is a scene where Alien is held at gunpoint by Brit and Candy. Not only that but they thrust the silencer tipped pistols into his mouth. For some time he just let's it happen. Then he begins to suck. He fellates the guns. Both at the same time. For a man who has anything he wants: money, guns, drugs, cars, pussy, what is left? Has his excess made him just as jaded as their poverty.

The first time I saw this film I was like the character of Faith, I wanted to go home. It scared me. Early on, three of the girls rob a diner. It is so casually apathetic and tinged with an alarming intelligence, these girls aren't mindless thugs, they are just bored. It reminded me of an anecdote I heard about DC. Young kids are carjacking Ubers to post on social media for clout and they know they won't go to jail because they are so young. They are not doing it for money or power, just views.

There are some funny shots. I laughed at the pair of tits getting showered with beer in the opening montage. It was just so overt, I enjoyed it. Franco is funny and sensitive here. The girls crush their performances. At moments they are all beyond performance and show us some weird truth. Whatever. Gucci Mane saying 'they taking food out my baby's mouth... my baby starving' while sitting in a Florida mansion with a Lambo outside and a few pounds of weed pyramided on the coffee table. You almost aren't sure if you're supposed to laugh but it is funny.

I think it is Harmony Korine's destiny or purpose or more likely stubborn determination to find beauty or something like it in the most bizarre or wretched circumstances. And he is a visual fetishist so there is no shortage of painterly images in here. But even after a more enjoyed viewing I cannot shake some dirty little feeling about this poor souls.
