The Beach Bum (2019)

10/02/23

I suppose I expected something else. But this is a good film. Sometimes a good film is better than a gReAt fIlM. And this is a good film. I also suppose that I liked it so much precisely because my expectations were shattered. I just read a review that called it the worst movie of 2019. Taste is just so delicious.

So I'm not sure if I should prepare you too much? Can you just trust me? I think that is what you do when a film is good. You tell someone to just watch it.

It's shot on film and there are good looking shots and weird shots. There is a story. I bet you could write down 'story beats' whatever those are but-- I think it's just enjoyable, man. It's funny too. In what other film could you laugh so earnestly at this line:  'You know what I like the most about being rich. You can just be horrible to people and they just have to take it.' [I can't do the delivery any justice here and I won't tell you which character says it or how they say it. And I almost don't even want to write that down because seeing it in print just looks bleh.

I listened recently to Harmony Korine on Marc Maron's podcast and he talked about the idea of not wanting or maybe not needing to 'say something' with film and instead just create a feeling. So that's what I'll leave you with. Do you want to be told something? Or what aboutta vibe? A vibe? This a vibe.

[I keep wanting to write more and more about this film but I'm holding off, doing you a service! My inner Ebert is gnashing, fucking gnashing. But I've tied 'im to a post and I'll hit publish next and that'll be that.]
