The Scent of Green Papaya (1993)

9/28/23

This film is like its main character. Mui does not speak often and takes great interest in her experience. She is enthralled by the crickets, the ants, the seeds of the papaya fruit. And so are we.

There is this great scene that takes place after Mui has grown up and is now employed by Khuyen, a musician and family friend of her initial employers. Khuyen plays piano, his fiancee talks. She cannot get his attention and once his playing becomes stormy she storms out into the rain. She stops at the window and peers inside to witness Mui bringing food to Khuyen who now plays calmly. She cries with some sort of understanding and frustration.

I think I will watch this film again someday when I am much older maybe.
